Empire IP entity, Fleet Connect, Wi-Fi patent challenge instituted

On March 25, 2025, two months after Unified filed an ex parte reexamination, the Central Reexamination Unit (CRU) granted Unified’s request, finding substantial new questions of patentability on the challenged claims of U.S. Patent 7,742,388, owned and asserted by Fleet Connect Solutions, LLC, an NPE and entity of Empire IP. The '388 patent focuses on a system and method for increased bandwidth in digital communications, particularly within local and wide area networks including WLANs and mobile networks. It has been asserted in over 45 cases, most recently against UAB Xirgo Global, Werner Enterprises, Cedar Electronics, Nextbase, and others.

On February 4, 2025, Unified Patents filed an ex parte reexamination proceeding against U.S. Patent 7,742,388, owned and asserted by Fleet Connect Solutions, LLC, an NPE and entity of Empire IP. The '388 patent focuses on a system and method for increased bandwidth in digital communications, particularly within local and wide area networks including WLANs and mobile networks. It has been asserted in over 45 cases, most recently against Werner Enterprises, Ezurio, Lantronix, Cedar Electronics, Juniper Networks, and others.

Empire IP entity, Fleet Connect, wireless patent reexam granted

On November 20, 2023, two months after Unified filed an ex parte reexamination, the Central Reexamination Unit (CRU) granted Unified’s request, finding a substantial new question of patentability on the challenged claims of U.S. Patent 7,058,040, owned and asserted by Fleet Connect Solutions, LLC, an NPE and entity of Empire IP. The ‘040 patent generally relates to minimizing RF channel interference in a device where two RF standards operate in the same frequency bands. The patent is being asserted against devices that have the ability to communicate using LTE, 802.11, or Bluetooth. Companies asserted against include Penske Auto, Aptiv, USIC Locating Services, Rivian, and Peloton.
