Fortress IP entity Entropic Communications cable packet transmission patent found invalid in reexam

On November 22, 2023, the Central Reexamination Unit (CRU) entered a final rejection of the challenged claims of U.S. Patent 8,228,910, owned by Entropic Communications, LLC, an NPE and a Fortress IP entity. The '910 patent relates to aggregating packets for transmission to a destination node and has been asserted against Comcast, Cox Communications, Charter Communications, and Dish.

Dolby VVC patent revoked in EPO

On November 30, 2023, the European Patent Office revoked all claims of EP 3675491, owned by Dolby International AB. EP ‘491 generally relates to video coding techniques that use data hiding to decrease bandwidth. The patent is related to patents that are designated essential to the Access Advance patent pool and has also been identified as potentially essential to the Versatile Video Coding (VVC) standard.

Atlantic IP entity, Foras Technologies, parallel processor patent reexam granted

On November 29, 2023, less than three months after Unified filed an ex parte reexamination, the Central Reexamination Unit (CRU) granted Unified’s request, finding a substantial new question of patentability on the challenged claims of U.S. Patent 7,502,958, owned and asserted by Foras Technologies, Ltd., an NPE and entity of Atlantic IP Services Limited. The ‘958 patent relates to lockstep processor technology where two processors are paired together, and the two processors perform exactly the same-operations and the results-are compared.(e.g., with an XOR gate).

GEVC HEVC patent revoked in EPO

On November 28, 2023, the European Patent Office announced the revocation of all claims of EP 2805491, owned by GE Video Compression, LLC. The ‘491 patent is generally directed to video coding using parallel processing. It is related to patents that have been declared essential to Access Advance patent pool. This filing was a part of Unified’s ongoing efforts in its SEP Video Codec Zone.

Empire IP entity, Fleet Connect, wireless patent reexam granted

On November 20, 2023, two months after Unified filed an ex parte reexamination, the Central Reexamination Unit (CRU) granted Unified’s request, finding a substantial new question of patentability on the challenged claims of U.S. Patent 7,058,040, owned and asserted by Fleet Connect Solutions, LLC, an NPE and entity of Empire IP. The ‘040 patent generally relates to minimizing RF channel interference in a device where two RF standards operate in the same frequency bands. The patent is being asserted against devices that have the ability to communicate using LTE, 802.11, or Bluetooth. Companies asserted against include Penske Auto, Aptiv, USIC Locating Services, Rivian, and Peloton.
