Ideahub (former ETRI) HEVC Patent Revoked in EPO

On November 22, 2023, the European Patent Office announced the revocation of all claims of EP 3402195. The EP ‘195 patent is currently owned by Ideahub Inc. but was previously owned by the Electronics and Telecommunications Research Institute (ETRI). The EP ‘195 patent involves improving the efficiency of encoding and decoding methods with particular reference to determining quantization parameters for encoding and decoding object blocks such that the quantization parameters are adaptively set according to prevailing or neighboring conditions. It is related to patents that have been declared essential to Access Advance and SISVEL’s AV1 patent pool.

SOTAT surveillance patent reexam granted

On November 24, 2023, less than a month after Unified filed an ex parte reexamination, the Central Reexamination Unit (CRU) granted Unified’s request, finding a substantial new question of patentability on the challenged claims of U.S. Patent 9,854,207, owned and asserted by SOTAT, LLC, an NPE. The ‘207 patent relates to a mobile surveillance system that connects to a mobile device and has been asserted against twelve defendants, including Canary Connect, HeathCo, Wyze Labs, Adobe Systems, Vivint, and Resideo.

Graphite Charging power supply patent challenged

On November 21, 2023, Unified Patents filed an ex parte reexamination proceeding against U.S. Patent 8,291,243, owned by Graphite Charging Company LLC, an NPE. The ‘243 patent relates to an adaptive power supply system and has been asserted against Tesla.

MDSP Technologies navigation patent reexam granted

On November 13, 2023, two months after Unified filed an ex parte reexamination, the Central Reexamination Unit (CRU) granted Unified’s request, finding a substantial new question of patentability on the challenged claims of U.S. Patent 9,239,376, owned and asserted by MDSP Technologies LLC. The ‘376 patent relates to determining the position and acceleration of a mobile device using doppler aided inertial navigation. It has been asserted against Google, Apple, Samsung, Garmin, and TomTom.

Dialect natural language patent reexam granted

On November 14, 2023, less than two months after Unified filed an ex parte reexamination, the Central Reexamination Unit (CRU) granted Unified’s request, finding a substantial new question of patentability on the challenged claims of U.S. Patent 9,495,957, owned and asserted by Dialect, LLC, an NPE. The ‘957 patent relates to natural language human machine interactions using context information. The patent has been asserted against Amazon and Samsung
