K. Mizra GPS patent held invalid

On May 11, 2023, the Patent Trial and Appeal Board (PTAB) issued a final written decision in Unified Patents, LLC v. K. Mizra LLC holding all challenged claims of U.S. Patent 7,394,423 unpatentable. Owned and asserted by K. Mizra LLC, the ‘423 patent generally relates to a device for initiating and handling an emergency IP request using an IP enabled device having GPS capability. The patent had been asserted against General Motors.

Interdigital 3GPP patent revoked by EPO

On May 12, 2023, the European Patent Office revoked all claims of EP 3497866. Owned by InterDigital, the EP’866 patent relates to wireless transmission methods for supporting multiple numerology blocks or bandwidth parts on a carrier signal, which is related to 5G wireless technology. This was the first EPO filing within Unified’s 3GPP Zone.

Pedersen '920 message distribution patent likely invalid

On May 15, 2023, the Patent Trial and Appeal Board (PTAB) instituted trial on all challenged claims in an IPR filed by Unified against U.S. Patent 6,965,920, owned and asserted by Peter Henrik Pedersen. The '920 patent is generally directed to the specification and management of how messages are distributed to recipients. The patent has been asserted against several companies including Google, Microsoft, Yahoo, Zoho Corp., Salesforce, Oracle, Adobe, Intuit, Wix.com, Zendesk, and others.

Torchlight Technologies automotive patent likely invalid

On May 4, 2023, the Patent Trial and Appeal Board (PTAB) instituted trial on all challenged claims in an IPR filed by Unified against U.S. Patent 11,208,029, owned and asserted by Torchlight Technologies LLC, an NPE. The '029 patent is directed to a headlight system that increases light in a direction of road curvature. Torchlight has asserted the patent against several auto companies including Audi, Daimler, Mercedes-Benz USA, Porsche, Volkswagen, and GM.

Bandspeed IoT patent reexam granted

On May 8, 2023, the Central Reexamination Unit (CRU) granted Unified’s request, finding substantial new questions of patentability on the challenged claims of U.S. Patent 7,903,608, owned and asserted by Bandspeed, LLC, an NPE. The ‘608 patent is generally directed to communication devices for adaptive frequency-hopping based on channel performance. The patent has been asserted in over 20 litigations since 2014 but most recently against Renesas, Itron, Espressif Systems, TCL, ASUStek, and others.
