Velos Media video codec patent reexam granted

On April 20, 2023, less than two months after Unified filed an ex parte reexamination, the USPTO granted Unified’s request, finding substantial new questions of patentability on the challenged claims of U.S. Patent 9,497,469, owned and asserted by Velos Media, an NPE. The ‘469 patent relates to a device for indicating information about a leading picture for decoding images at a random access point.

IP Valuation entity Lupercal reexam successfully challenged

On April 26, 2023, the PTAB issued a reexam certificate against U.S. Patent 9,386,094 cancelling all challenged claims. Owned and asserted by Lupercal, LLC, an NPE and IP Valuation Partners entity, the '094 patent is generally directed to an image submission tool that can pre-process images prior to image upload based on pre-processing parameters received from a separate device. The patent had previously been asserted against Ally Financial and BancorpSouth Bank.

Optis Wireless 4G/LTE patent reexam granted

On April 13, 2023, six weeks after Unified filed an ex parte reexamination, the USPTO granted Unified’s request, finding substantial new questions of patentability on the challenged claims of U.S. Patent 9,137,830, owned and asserted by Optis Wireless Technology, LLC, an NPE and Brevet Capital entity. The ‘830 patent is generally directed to reducing collision while reporting control information in radio communications between a mobile station (i.e., any user equipment capable of performing radio transmission) and a base station. This filing is a part of Unified’s 3GPP Zone.

ETRI/HBNU video codec patent likely invalid

On April 19, 2023, the Patent Trial and Appeal Board (PTAB) instituted trial on all challenged claims in an PGR filed by Unified against U.S. Patent 11,212,553, owned by the Electronics and Telecommunications Research Institute (ETRI) and Hanbat National University Industry-Academic Cooperation Foundation. The ‘553 patent is directed to decoding methods and apparatuses that use intra-prediction to reconstruct an image. The ‘553 patent is a recently issued patent that has been identified as potentially essential to the Versatile Video Coding (VVC) standard.

Entangled Media file sharing patent challenged

On April 17, 2023, Unified Patents filed an ex parte reexamination proceeding against U.S. Patent 8,484,260, owned by Entangled Media LLC. The patent relates to operating on files located on multiple devices using a singular file system and is being asserted against Dropbox.
