Joseph Yoon patent likely invalid

On March 29, 2022, the Patent Trial and Appeal Board (PTAB) instituted trial on all challenged claims in an IPR filed by Unified against U.S. Patent 9,376,076, owned and asserted by Joseph Y. Yoon IP LLC. The '076 patent is generally directed to airbag deployment technology and was asserted against Toyota.

Two InterDigital patents revoked in the EPO

On March 10, 2022, InterDigital elected to withdraw the approval of their claims on both EP 1869893 B1 and EP 1872588 B1, bringing Unified’s opposition proceedings to an end. The EP ’893 and EP ’588 patents were part of a family purportedly essential to HEVC and part of the SISVEL AV1 patent pool. This filing is a part of Unified’s ongoing efforts in its SEP Video Codec Zone.

PacSec3 '497 patent successfully challenged

On March 18, 2022, less than a year after Unified filed its request for ex parte reexamination, the USPTO issued a final office action rejecting claims 1, 4, 7, 13, and 16 of U.S. Patent 7,523,497, owned by PacSec3, an NPE. PacSec3 was formed in 2020 with NACAR IP LLC as its managing member. NACAR IP was also formed in early 2020 with Dynamic IP Deals, LLC (d/b/a DynaIP), a patent monetization company, identified as its managing member. The ‘497 patent had been asserted against F5 Networks, NetScout Systems, Palo Alto Networks, McAfee, Cisco, and Juniper Networks.

Former Velos EP patent successfully challenged at the EPO

On February 22, 2022, all of the original claims of EP 2 347 591 B1, formerly owned by Velos Media, LLC and now owned by Qualcomm, were found unpatentable based on a challenge filed by Unified. The ‘591 patent is generally related to decoding data using macroblocks. This filing is a part of Unified's ongoing efforts in its SEP Video Codec Zone.

DivX patent likely invalid

On March 17, 2022, the Patent Trial and Appeal Board (PTAB) instituted trial on all challenged claims in an IPR filed by Unified against U.S. Patent 10,326,987, owned by DivX, LLC, an affiliate of SoftBank Group Corp. This filing is part of Unified's ongoing efforts in its SEP Video Codec Zone. The '987 patent was asserted against Hulu and is directed to encoding alternative streams of video for use in adaptive bitrate streaming.
