Equitable IP entity Optic153's patent likely invalid

On December 21, 2021, the Patent Trial and Appeal Board (PTAB) instituted trial on all challenged claims of U.S. Patent 6,115,174, owned by Optic153 LLC, an Equitable IP entity. The '174 patent is generally related to devices that vary optical signals and has been previously asserted against Comcast, Verizon, T-Mobile, Windstream Holdings, Dish Network, Charter Communications, Crown Castle International Corp., and AT&T.

Another Dolby patent deemed essential in multiple HEVC/AV1 pools invalidated in China

On December 20, 2021, the China National Intellectual Property Administration declared all claims of CN102256122, owned by Dolby International AB, invalid. CN102256122 is purportedly essential or related to patents purportedly essential to the HEVC Advance pool and SISVEL’s AV1 and VP9 pools.

Jeffrey M. Gross entity Callstat Solutions patent challenged

On December 17, 2021, Unified filed a petition for inter partes review (IPR) against U.S. Patent 6,236,983, owned by Callstat Solutions LLC, an NPE and an entity of Jeffrey M. Gross. The ‘983 patent relates to collecting information about a computer system and applying rules to the collected information. It has been asserted against cybersecurity and client management software, including software sold by BMC Software, McAfee, and Check Point Software.

Voice Tech patent held invalid

On December 13, 2021, the Patent Trial and Appeal Board (PTAB) issued a final written decision in Unified Patents, LLC v. Voice Tech Corporation holding all claims of U.S. Patent 10,491,679 invalid. The ’679 patent relates to remotely controlling a computer's operating system and applications using voice commands from a mobile device. The patent was asserted against Mycroft AI Inc. for using open source, voice-related technologies.

IP Edge affiliate Karamelion patent invalidated

On December 9, 2021, the USPTO issued a notice of intent to issue a reexamination certificate, canceling all claims of U.S. Patent 6,275,166, owned by Karamelion LLC, an NPE and affiliate of IP Edge. The ‘166 patent relates to relaying communications to appliances from a central computer and has been asserted in over 40 district court litigations. The reexamination certificate took less than a year to issue.
