Aprese reexamination request granted

On May 13, 2021, three weeks after Unified filed an ex parte reexamination, the USPTO granted Unified's request, finding substantial new questions of patentability on all challenged claims of U.S. Patent 9,207,924, owned by Aprese Systems Texas, LLC. The ‘924 patent relates generally to management of applications and/or services based on contextual information. It has been asserted against Toyota.

Dolby patent challenged in China

On May 19, 2021, Unified Patents filed a Chinese invalidation request for CN1663258 owned by Dolby International AB. CN1663258 has been designated essential to the HEVC Advance pool and SISVEL’s AV1 pool. It is also related to patents that have been designated in those pools.

DigiMedia Tech patent determined to be likely invalid

On May 18, 2021, the Patent Trial and Appeal Board (PTAB) instituted trial on all challenged claims of U.S. Patent 7,715,476, formerly owned by Intellectual Ventures but now owned by DigiMedia Tech LLC, an NPE and an IP Investments Group entity. The ‘476 patent is generally related to displaying video images generated by a camera on a display, and more particularly to tracking a head portion of a person image in camera-generated video images. The ‘476 patent has been asserted against Olympus Corp., Fujifilm Holdings, Sakar International, Nikon, JK Imaging, and Elite Brands.

Aeritas patent challenged

On May 18, 2021, Unified Patents filed an ex parte reexamination against U.S. Patent 9,390,435, owned by Aeritas LLC, an NPE. The ‘435 patent relates to receiving notifications, e.g., notification related to products or services of interest, at a mobile device based on the location of the mobile device and notification criteria, and then receiving information, e.g., additional information about the products or services or a purchase confirmation, at the mobile device in response to an input. The patent has been asserted in 21 litigations, including current assertions against Finnair Oyi, Darden Restaurants, Whataburger Restaurants, Burger King, and WestJet Airlines.

Gesture Technology Partners patent challenged

On May 14, 2021, Unified filed a petition for inter partes review (IPR) against U.S. Patent 7,933,431, owned by Gesture Technology Partners, LLC. The ‘431 patent is generally related to using human motion as an input device for computers and mobile devices and has been asserted against Huawei, Samsung, Apple, Lenovo, and LG.
