On January 29, 2021, Unified Patents filed an ex parte reexamination proceeding against U.S. Patent 9,645,720, owned and asserted by Crandall Technologies LLC, an NPE. The ’720 patent is related to digital data sharing and has been asserted against Vudu.

It found substantial questions of patentability for all claims of U.S. Patent 9,743,086, owned by Velos Media. The '086 patent has been designated as essential in the Velos Media patent pool.

Adverse Judgment Granted in Arsus IPR

On January 27, 2021, the PTAB issued an order granting request for adverse judgment in Unified Patents, LLC v. Arsus, LLC. Arsus disclaimed every claim challenged in IPR2020-00948, U.S. Patent 10,259,494 (claims 1-5, 8-12, 21, and 22).

Engle Grange patent determined to be likely invalid

On January 21, 2021, the Patent Trial and Appeal Board (PTAB) instituted trial on all challenged claims in an IPR filed by Unified against U.S. Patent 8,548,645, owned by Engle Grange, LLC, an NPE. The ‘645 patent is generally directed towards a two-step key fob authentication system for an automobile. The patent was asserted against Ford in early 2020.

IP Edge sub, Karetek Holdings, settles with Unified Patents

On January 8, 2021, the Board issued an order terminating IPR2020-01550 pursuant to a joint settlement request filed by Unified Patents and Karetek Holdings LLC, an NPE and subsidiary of IP Edge. U.S. Patent 7,373,515, related to a multi-factor authentication system, had been asserted against RetailMeNot, Golds Gym, HelloFresh, PetSmart, Alamo Drafthouse Cinemas, and others.
